My Key Performance Indicator Reflection for July and August
I like to set goals in 60-day increments.
I've tried setting monthly goals and found them too short to make meaningful progress, while quarterly goals always seemed to drag by the end.
At the end of each 60-day period, I like to take a weekend afternoon to reflect on my key performance indicators (KPIs) that measure my progress toward those goals.
I split my goals into five broad areas:
- Health
- Wealth
- Relationships
- Work
- Growth
The first four areas are pretty straight forward. "Growth" is anything I am working on growing or improving. Each area has a set of KPIs that help me gauge whether I am on the right track.
The last two months I've been home at my Mom's house in Florida after being in New York City for two years. It's interesting to step back and see some of the changes that have happened since I moved here.
If you have any thoughts on setting goals, KPIs, or measuring goals, be sure to leave a comment at the bottom or email me!
Health
I track five KPIs for my health: weight, sleep, resting heart rate, steps, and days meditated. If I could only track one, it would be my resting heart rate, which really is a composite measure of all the others.
Weight
My median weight these last two months was 193.9 lbs, the lowest since I was 15 years old. I have a longer-term goal of getting to 183 lbs, only because the heaviest I was during my football days was 283 lbs - after a very indulgent college weekend.
This chart is since the start of 2019, smoothed to a 10-day rolling average. Plenty of ups and downs along the way!
Goal for the next 60 days: reach 185lbs.
Sleep
I break out my sleep by weekdays and weekends since they usually vary slightly. During weekdays, I slept for 7 hours, 20 minutes on average these past two months, which is pretty good. My average bedtime was 9:47 PM and my average wake up time was 5:11 AM.
On the weekend, I slept for 7 hours, 18 minutes on avearge, but my average bedtime was 11:28 PM and my average wake up time was 6:39 AM. Not much to change here, other than I think I should sleep a bit longer on the weekends.
It's cool to see my sleep trends over time and conect them to how I'm feeling in general. I can see that since I got home, my sleep has been about 20 minutes lower than when I was in New York. But - there is good momentum and things are trending back up.
I want to get a better gauge of my sleep quality going forward, which really can be measured by my resting heart rate.
Goal for the next 60 days: sleep more than 7.5 hours/night and create a "sleep quality" KPI.
Resting Heart Rate
My resting heart rate was 51 bpm these past 60 days, up slightly over the past few months. I think this is the most accurate composite indicator of overall health, so I am focusing on getting this back into the mid-40s.
Goal for the next 60 days: average a resting heart rate of below 48.
Steps
I've been walking a lot more since I've been back in Florida, trying to get at least 15k steps per day. In the morning, I'll walk two miles after working out and listen/take notes on a podcast. In the afternoon, I'll schedule two calls back to back and pop outside for an hour walk.
I took 10,603 steps/day on average the past 60 days, but in just August, that was 13,500, so things are trending up. I want to stay in the 13,000+ range longer term.
Goal for the next 60 days: walk an average of 13,000 steps/day.
Meditation
I meditated every morning for at least 10 minutes for the past 60 days. I am looking to keep the streak going and eventually up my meditation to 15 minutes/day. I've been just doing silent, timed meditations with the Calm app, as guided meditations don't work that well for me.
Goal for the next 60 days: keep the streak alive + move to 15 minutes/day.
Workouts
I keep track of my workouts in a notebook but don't do any kind of aggregation over the longer term. I probably should, but I think the other indicators tell me enough about whether they are working or not. I've been focusing a lot on jump roping, pushups, and kettlebell swings the past 60 days. I've gone from taking 16 minutes to do 1,000 jump ropes to hitting 1,000 consecutive in 7.5 minutes. I've gone from being able to do 41 consecutive KB swings with an 80# kettlebell to 75 consecutive (which was not fun at all). And I've knocked out 100 or more pushups 6 days/week for the past four weeks, a streak I want to keep going and eventually move up to 150.
Goal for the next 60 days: continue six workouts/week, hit 100 consecutive 80# KB swings, jump rope for 2000 straight jumps, and complete 60 unbroken pushups.
Growth
I group everything that I am trying to grow under one broad category of "growth." This includes my Twitter, personal newsletter, markets newsletter, websites, as well as personal growth like reading books and articles and listening to podcasts.
I started a new Twitter account and July and have focused on tweeting more and more. Twitter is a place for me to refine ideas, share what I'm learning, and interact daily with other like-minded people.
I tweeted 323 times, generating 453k impressions, 4,862 profile visits, and gained 527 followers.
Goal for the next 60 days: reach 1500 followers.
Dickie's Digest
I write a weekly newsletter called Dickie's Digest where I share high-signal content on growth of all kinds: personal, mental, intellectual, physical, financial, business, and network growth. You can check it out here!
In the past 60 days, I've gone from 165 subscribers to 295, growth of 78% - not bad!
Goal for the next 60 days: reach 500 Digest subscribers, which would be 60% growth.
Macro 5/5/5
I write a weekly macro newsletter called Macro 5/5/5 which recaps the five biggest events in global macro, looks at five interesting global macro charts, and provides five links to interesting research reports, financial podcasts, or other cool websites. If you work in financial markets, email me at dickie@dickiebush.com and I can get you set up.
Over the past 60 days, Macro 5/5/5 has gone from 41 readers to 105, growth of 150%.
Goal for the next 60 days: reach 250 readers.
Dickiebush.com
Six months into writing on this blog, I'm finally starting to settle into a regular cadence and comfort in what I like to write about. Including this post, I will have written six posts over the last 60 days:
- Lost in Transition: How I'm Fixing my To-Do List
- Inversion: The Reframing Technique of Top Thinkers
- 22 Questions To Have Great Answers To (and My Answers to Them)
- My 10 Go-To Reflection Questions (and Where I Found Them)
- How to Get Lucky: Less Chance, More Chances
Looking at the numbers, this site generated 2800 unique visitors and 4,392 page views. Not bad!
Goal for the next 60 days: publish eight essays, read and upload six books, reach 5000 unique visitors, and have 10,000 page views.
Content Consumption
I keep track of the number of books I read, podcasts I take notes on, and articles that resonate. I store notes on each page in Notion, and transfer the best ideas to Roam
Books
I was quite disappointed to see I only read two books in the last 60 days. My reading habit has taken a hit since I got home, so I'm looking to change that. That means getting back to reading for 30-45 minutes before bed every night, an activity that's been replaced by scrolling Twitter recently.
The books I did read:
Goal for the next 60 days: read and upload notes on six books.
Podcasts
My podcast listening on the other hand is at an all-time high. I took notes on 15 epic podcasts, each of which I will link here:
- Oliver Cantin on the Mastering the Attention Economy Podcast
- Noah Kagan's 10 Best Career Lessons

- Sahil Laviniga on the Noah Kagan Podcast
Goal for the next 60 days: listen to and take notes on 15 podcasts.
Articles
I read quite a few articles this month, 61 to be exact. This includes newsletters that I have autoforwarding to my Instapaper. Some of the best I read over the past 60 days:
- Nat Eliason: How to Start a Blog that Changes Your Life
- Nathan Barry: The Ladders of Wealth Creation
- The Ultimate Guide to Reading a Book a Week for Your Career
- Mark Manson: The Attention Diet
Goal for the next 60 days: read and take notes on 20 high-quality, long-form essays.
Wealth
I really only track one indicator here and its my net worth. It's the perfect composite measure of my income, spending, and investment performance. It keeps it relatively simple as well. I use an app called Copilot to track my spending, and it takes five minutes/week to stay on top of it.
Over the past 60 days, my net worth has increased 36%, which I'm pretty stoked about. A mix of not paying rent (since I'm back in Florida) and the fact that stocks only go up both contributed nicely.
Goals for the next 60 days: increase net worth +10%.
Relationships
This isn't an area I really like to think about KPIs as there isn't a good way to measure the quality of your relationships, it's just something you have to gauge. However, the one metric I do track is the number of new people I meet / have a call with. One of the biggest reasons I write the Digest, Tweet, or post on this blog is to attract like-minded and interesting people. Over the past 60 days, I've met 21 new people from either the Digest, Twitter, Macro 5/5/5, or posts on this blog. Not bad!
Goals for the next 60 days: meet 25 new people.
That's it for this 60-day sprint. I didn't include any of my direct KPIs for work, but there's a few more there including tracking how I spend my time and what I'm spending my time on.
